Our Story - Bear
"Bear": Big, Black But Definitely Not Scary!
I recently adopted a two-year-old male Akita cross, named "Bear", from the RSPCA. He'd been at the Dubbo centre for several months and had then been transferred to the Blue Mountains facility, where he'd remained for a few more months. And that's where we, the Goldsmith family, found him.
The staff at the RSCPA told me all about him over the phone and, I have to admit, I fell in love with him just from the description.
That weekend, we ventured up from Sydney to take a look at this big bear of a dog . . . who was meant to be a big smoocher.
When we got to the RSPCA he was the first dog we saw. He didn't bark like the other dogs, wagging his tail instead and jumping like a jack-in-the-box with excitement as we walked over. As soon as we entered his enclosure, he was licking us and letting us give him cuddles and belly rubs. Our hearts melted and taking him home was a foregone conclusion very, very quickly! And so, after a premises inspection, we picked up our Bear.

He goes to agility training once a week and can now jump, "high five", shake, drop, sit, stay, stand and "drop it" on command. He's even learnt how to use the agility equipment at the local dog park (all except for the weaving poles).
He does indeed look like a big, black scary bear, but in reality he's a big, loveable goofball who, ironically, has helped various friends of ours to overcome a previous fear of dogs.
